Tips for naming a Charities and Non-Profits Business

The right name for a charity organization should inspire people and make them feel empathetic with a cause.

Achieving both goals in a few simple words isn’t such an easy task. You have to make the name specific, you have to stay away from the clichés. Also, you have to let the personality of the charity organization shine through the title.

To accomplish these essential goals (and then some more), you can count on a couple of very important and effective charity naming tips.

  1. Use descriptive and action words: a combination of a descriptive word and an action word works really well for charities and non-profits. For example, your charity collects computers and books for kids from underprivileged families. A good descriptive word linked to this charity would be enlightening, enriching or technological. A good action word would be connect, collect or empower. Hence, a good name for this charity may be something like The Enlightening Connection or Tech Empower.
  2. Focus on the group you help: it should be clear right from the start what the purpose of the particular charity is. Are you trying to help kids? Victims of domestic violence? Stray animals? Endangered species? The title should reference the recipient in some way to attract volunteers/sponsors who have an interest in the same cause.
  3. Think about an acronym, as well: most non-profit organizations and charities will have a name acronym as a part of their branding effort. When brainstorming ideas, make sure that the title you’re interested in can be turned into a cool acronym. Here’s a good example of such a name – Mothers Against Drunk Drivers and its incredibly powerful acronym of MADD.

Try to keep your name very specific and concrete. Turning the title into an actionable phrase is even better. Charities need a very strong message (due to the fact that marketing budgets could be limited). This is why you need to put enough time into making the right charity name happen.

If you’re still stuck on creating some name ideas, here’s a breakdown of some of the top brands and businesses in the industry. Here I’ll explain why the name works for that company, and how the name appeals to customers. What’s more, a few more team members from BizNameWiz have added their name ideas below aswell!

Save the Children

this is as specific as it can get. The organization works on offering better living conditions to impoverished children through initiatives aimed at better healthcare, education and through the provision of economic opportunities. Concise and impactful, the title is exactly what a charity name should strive to be.

Habitat for Humanity

is there anyone on the face of the planet who doesn’t know what habitat for humanity is or what they do? The organization uses volunteer work to build houses (safe and affordable homes) for those who don’t have one or who have lost theirs.

Feeding America

this is another charity name that may sound simple but that carries a ton of significance. Through a network of food banks, Feeding America is working on making sure nobody has to endure hunger, regardless of their financial status.
